About us

If you ask Karsten or Inge about their passion for camping, holiday guests, sustainability and service, you must have plenty of time to listen. Because there is a lot to tell and they like to tell.

If you just want the short version, you can read along here. Then you are quickly updated.

The campsite today

We, Inge and Karsten, took over Blokhus By Camping in December 2014, and we are only the 5th owners in the campsite’s long history. We are both in our mid-50s and, before we took over this lovely campsite, were lessees at another campsite in Denmark.

When we own and operate our own campsite today, it is a dream come true.

In December 2017, we expanded our dream with another campsite. We bought and took over Blokhus Klit Camping. The former Rimmensgaard Camping. We are in the process of transforming this campsite so that you can spend the night right in the middle of wild nature. The campsite is now called Blokhus Natur Camping and is moving forward at full speed. In 2021, the site was nominated both by ADAC and the Danish Camping Awards for the way we work with sustainability and nature restoration. See much more about the square here: Blokhus Natur Camping

Our primary purpose with overnight offers on camping and in nature  is to create the framework, and then our guests have to fill in the content themselves. Happy and smiling customers – make us happy and smiling.

Smile – it’s infectious!

The story

Today, Blokhus By Camping stands out as one of Denmark’s best campsites. Yes, it is great to say that our campsite is among the best in the country. But it is because:

We would like to meet our guests’ demand for cabins with their own toilet, bath and kitchen. Therefore, we plan to establish a new cabin area for such cabins. The old and disused cabins have new owners, and they are all in use today as annexes, offices, hunting lodges, dog salons, sales and exhibition rooms and much more. Nice that the cabins have been able to be used elsewhere when they no longer had their right with us. We are happy with the recycling idea: We are responsible.

We are continuously working on replacing the dividers between the places and the place numbers. The new poles are made of larch wood and thus self-impregnated. This means that they can stand for many years and do not need to be treated with oil, paint or the like. This is in line with our sustainable ambitions for the campsite.

We are also constantly renovating the mini golf course. Wind and weather wear hard on the gangs/logs between the holes. That is why we replace the logs with field stones, which do not break down. The logs are replaced as we fell trees on the site. A solution that we are incredibly happy with, as it goes hand in hand with our sustainable ambitions for the square.

In the summer of 2018, we had the large service building painted, so that it has now changed from brown bricks to water-washed white. In June 2018, we received three large family cabins. Each cabin is 30 square meters and is furnished with its own kitchen and living room in one, bathroom, a bunk room and a bedroom with a 3/4 bed. The sofa in the living room is a sofa bed. The cabins therefore have 5 sleeping places. The three family cabins are winter-insulated and can also, by agreement, be rented in the winter.

In May 2018, we were ready to start renting out our two Beach Houses. The beach houses are located on the campsite, and are copies of the small and charming houses you see on the beach at Blokhus during the summer period. Our two beach houses are recycled. Previously we had a toilet building/shed standing on the eastern part of the site. It is this shed that we sawed in half, rebuilt and arranged for accommodation.

In the winter of 2016/2017, the common room was water-scrubbed and painted. In the following spring, the entire large service building was water-washed externally. Later we took over furniture from a colleague’s campsite and from a café in Nr. Voruper. The old furniture was sold and the total amount went to the fight against cancer. This winter we also converted two of our small cabins into toilet houses. One hut was moved to the eastern part of the campsite and became the replacement for the former toilet shed.

In the spring of 2016, we established a new driveway with the help of Jammerbugt Municipality. Where previously it could cause traffic chaos when there was a queue at check-in, there is now the possibility to make an up-march along the campsite. It gives a completely different calm in the reception and not least in the traffic to and from Blokhus.

In 2016, the old gas boiler was also replaced with a new and more reliable boiler. Tiles were replaced in the areas around the service building. The rental bathrooms were painted and freshened up. The verandas of all the cabins were painted. Some cabins were painted inside.

In the spring of 2015, all the cabins got a new kitchen and part of the electricity stands out on the campsite were renovated. Before the start of the 2015 season, we also managed to cut down some of the old conifers. They had grown too tall and were starting to look wilted and bad. Now that the leaves are on the trees, the oak and beech get plenty of light and air to look good. During the coming winters, several of the old trees will be removed and new ones will be planted. Blokhus By Camping must continue to be a “forest” site with shelter for most people.

During the autumn and winter of 2015/2016, part of the units were renovated, so that several units were given a more contemporary size.

The swimming pool was given a “make-over” in the spring of 2015 and now looks nice and inviting – both for those who want to swim in the pool and for those who want to sunbathe on the deck chairs.
For the 2015 high season, we were also ready to open an additional section with showers/toilets. For some years, the bath/toilet section by the pool had been unused. We had years of dirt scrubbed away and a heat source installed. So now there is hot water again in the showers in the “Yellow Department”.

In the same year, the mini golf course was adapted so that it is significantly more play-friendly for everyone. We used the logs, from the trees we felled in the winter, for fairways and borders between the 9 holes of the miniature golf course. In 2020, however, we replaced these gangs and demarcations with fieldstones, as the trunks had deteriorated after several years of exposure to wind and weather.

In 2008, new kitchen facilities were established, so that today there are modern facilities in both kitchen and bathroom.

In 2005/2006, the toilet and shower facilities were rebuilt so that they correspond to the requirements for a 5-star campsite.

Blokhus By Camping has certainly existed since 1947, when the police chief in Nørresundby signed the first regulations for camping in the tent camp in Blokhus on 28 January. The regulations of the time are in many ways similar to the regulations of today, in terms of peace on the site, consideration for the other campers, prohibition of loose dogs and that every instruction or regulation from the inspector’s side must be followed closely to avoid expulsion. Back then, you had to buy straw for bedding from the campsite inspector, but it was strictly forbidden to resell it or leave it to others on departure. Used straw had to be handed over to the inspector for destruction. The original regulations from 1947 can be seen at the Engssamlingen in Saltum.

As can be seen from the picture from the regional collection in Saltum, a lot has happened since its establishment in 1947. Since Blokhus has always been a popular holiday destination due to its location between one of Denmark’s best beaches and Blokhus Klitplantage, the square has at one point been expanded to almost double size. At the campsite, new and more up-to-date facilities have been continuously established.
